1) Place the Speed Doubler 2.0.3 Updater on your hard drive.
2) Boot your Mac with extensions off, by holding down the SHIFT key at Welcome to Macintosh.
3) Double-click to launch the Updater.
4) Select "Update Master Disk". Unlock your master diskette and insert it into the floppy drive. The Updater updates the Speed Doubler 2 Installer and the installed Speed Doubler 2 extension and control panel to version 2.0.3 and prompts you to quit when completed.
--Speed Doubler 2 is currently designed to work with any version of MacOS™ 7, including MacOS 7.6.1. To prevent possible compatibility problems, Speed Doubler 2 will not load under MacOS 8. We are evaluating compatibility options for future versions of Speed Doubler with MacOS 8.
Faster File Copying:
--Fixed a potential crash problem that could occur when the Connectix Speed Copy dialog overlapped Finder windows in a specific manner.
--Fixed a rare crash problem caused when the data read speed was substantially different from the data write speed.
--Fixed a problem verifying files greater than 2MB while Apple's Personal File Sharing was active.
--Faster File Copying now properly detects and prevents attempts to replace a folder with one of its sub-folders.
--Fixed a problem duplicating multiple files where one of the selected files would not be duplicated.
--Fixed problems synchronizing folders on the same drive by holding down the Option key.
--Fixed problems with synchronize miscalculating the amount of data to be copied.
--Fixed a problem with synchronize reporting on the number of items copied.
--Fixed a problem drawing the extended Speed Erase window on 640x480 and smaller screens.
--For compatibility reasons, Speed Doubler 2's Verify option is disabled when copying to DOS volumes other than floppy disks. Finder verification will still function for these drives.
--Fixed a problem with Smart Replace and locked files that could cause a "File in Use" error.
--Option-dragging a folder into one of its own sub-folders is now correctly detected and prevented.
--Moving and copying files from the Desktop to a folder or volume is now handled properly.
Faster Disk Performance:
--Before loading, Speed Doubler 2 now checks the version of the Apple disk cache software. All currently available MacOS 7 disk caches, up to and including MacOS 7.6.1, are compatible with the Faster Disk Performance feature. However in the future, this feature will not load if it finds a version of the Apple disk cache with which it has not been tested.
--Fixed a problem which could lead to a crash at startup when booting from a volume larger than 4GB with the Faster Disk Performance feature active. The Faster Disk Performance feature only supports volumes up to 4GB. If Faster Disk Performance is active when booting from a volume larger than 4GB, this feature will be disabled and an error message displayed.
Faster Emulation:
--Fixed a very rare problem that could trigger an application memory stack error.
You can disable Speed Doubler 2 by holding down the SHIFT key at boot immediately *after* the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen appears.
Speed Doubler 2 consists of three main features: Faster File Copying, Faster Disk Performance, and Faster Emulation (on PowerPC's only). If you suspect a problem with Speed Doubler 2, try isolating the problem by turning off one, two, or three of these features in the Speed Doubler 2 control panel.
Holding down the CONTROL key while initiating a copy will disable Speed Doubler 2's Faster File Copying for that one copy session, reverting to a normal Finder copy. If you are having a problem copying files with Speed Doubler 2, try holding down the CONTROL key when copying to see if the Finder exhibits similar problems.

The Faster Emulation feature is designed only for the Power Macintosh®. It is compatible with the PowerPC 601, 603, and 604 processors. Faster Emulation is not available on machines booting with a 680x0 processor.
Alchemy -- sound editing music software by Passport Designs -- is not compatible with Speed Doubler 2's Faster Emulation feature, or Apple's dynamic recompiling emulator. Passport Designs is aware of the problem and is working on a solution.

Exodus (UNIX software) users should use version 1.0.2 or later.
*Important* From Ziff-Davis' MacBench 4.0 Read Me file: "The Mac OS has a bug with IDE drives and virtual memory. The effect of this bug is that the disk tests don't run reliably -- and may hang -- on some Alchemy-based Mac OS systems with IDE startup volumes and virtual memory turned on." MacBench 4.0 users should be aware of this problem (which happens with both Apple's Virtual Memory and Connectix RAM Doubler™) when attempting to benchmark their systems.
*Important* Faster Disk Performance does not support hard drive volumes larger than 4 gigabytes and will not support volumes of this size. Faster Disk Performance has the most benefit for slower drives (especially removables like the Iomega™ Zip and Jaz drives), and is typically not useful for fast, high capacity drives. Turn Faster Disk Performance OFF in the Speed Doubler 2 control panel if you use any volumes larger than 4 gigabytes.
Faster Disk Performance uses the amount of memory allocated to the disk cache in the Memory control panel. The amount is set automatically during Speed Doubler 2 installation and can be adjusted at any time through the disk cache setting in the Memory control panel.
Photoshop Users: Faster Disk Performance is "Photoshop Aware". This means that this feature understands the disk caching mechanisms used by Photoshop and will let Photoshop handle its caching when appropriate, regardless of the size of the disk cache. Adobe currently suggests setting your disk cache to 32k when using Photoshop. If you are using the Faster Disk Performance feature we recommend you ignore this suggestion and leave your cache at the setting created during Speed Doubler 2 installation, or at the very least 128Kb.
Stacker and/or the Stacker Removable Extension allocates an amount of memory equal to the size of the disk cache setting in the Memory control panel. As a result, system memory requirements increase accordingly; for example a configuration with a 1024Kb disk cache allocation and Stacker installed sees a memory of usage of 2048Kb.
Users of APS PowerTools and Casablanca Works Drive7 should disable these drivers' caching functions (use the 'disable driver cache' setting in those products) and leave 'disable System cache' unchecked in these control panels. Otherwise, drive performance decreases with both Faster Disk Performance and driver caching enabled.
Users of "sAVe the Disk", a freeware extension for the Centris/Quadra 660AV and 840AV should upgrade to version 1.5 or later.
Symantec's File Saver™ control panel (part of Norton Utilities™) stores certain information about deleted files; this information is stored in a proprietary format that Speed Doubler 2's Security Erase will not delete. Consequently, File Saver™ users may find that files deleted with Security Erase are partially or fully recoverable with Norton Unerase.
Speed Doubler 2's "Faster Network Copy Protocol" option should not be used in conjunction with other third party network copy accelerators like RunShare™ from Run Ltd., or NetDoubler™ from Asanté. Disable the other network copy accelerators or turn off Speed Doubler 2's "Use Faster Network Copy Protocol" option.
Speed Doubler 2's Faster File Copying options will not function on machines running any version of Apple's AtEase™ software. The Faster File Copying feature relies on aspects of the Apple Finder which are not available when AtEase is active.
Speed Doubler 2's Synchronize and Smart Replace functions operate at a folder level. Therefore, using Synchronize and/or Smart Replace will affect only the contents of folders, not the contents of files.
If you use Speed Doubler 2, Retrospect Remote 3.0, and a version of Open Transport earlier than 1.1.2, you may experience problems Restarting and Shutting Down. Updating to Open Transport 1.1.2 solves this problem.
Users with dial-up PPP or SLIP connections that use dynamically assigned IP addresses should disable Speed Doubler 2's "Use TCP/IP if Available" option (in the Speed Doubler 2 control panel, under the "Copy Options" tab). This feature currently only supports static IP addresses. We are evaluating possible workarounds for this.
Speed Doubler 2's Synchronize feature will not work with folders located on the Macintosh Desktop.
Users of the shareware Copland WDEF extension should update to version 1.0d16 or Faster File Copying will not work.
Files compressed with AutoDoubler, Now Compress, Now QuickFiler (part of Now Utilities), and SpaceSaver are decompressed when copied with the Faster File Copying feature.
Faster File Copying will automatically be turned off in the Speed Doubler 2 control panel if another copy-enhancing product -- such as Symantec's Copy Doubler -- is installed. In this case, you must remove or deactivate these other copy-enhancers before you can turn on Faster File Copying.
Faster File Copying is not activated by copies initiated by AppleScript.
Copying to a Netware 3.1.2 AppleShare server could result in spurious "Folder not Found" errors.
You can bypass Faster File Copying and Speed Erase by holding down the CONTROL key when copying, duplicating, or emptying the Trash. In these cases, the Finder will complete the task.
